If you're looking for NFL stars of the future, then Pahokee is the place for you. And if you love great powerboat and jet ski racing you'll find it there too next weekend. The town numbers less than 7,000 but consistently produces outstanding football players, and now it is about to host the P1 SuperStock and AquaX Championships.
Buried deep within the sugar cane fields and sitting on the banks of Lake Okeechobee, Pahokee's primary export besides sugar is football. P1 USA championship manager, Azam Rangoonwala said: "Since moving to Florida I've been told that Palm Beach County produces more football talent than anywhere else in America and heard so much about the 'Muck Boys' making it to the Super Bowl. I'm looking forward to taking our powerboat and jet ski racing stars to Pahokee next weekend for the national championships and to discovering why Muck City is such a football powerhouse."
Pahokee will host round 3 of the P1 SuperStock USA Championship and the second round of the newly-launched P1 AquaX jet ski series next weekend (20-21 July). Nine P1 Panther race boats will be competing on Lake Okeechobee - it means "big water" in the Seminole Indian language - together with more than a dozen AquaX riders.
In addition to scheduling the packed programme of eleven races over the weekend, Azam is working to ensure that no harm comes to the local wildlife. The freshwater lake is a multiple-use resource which supports valuable commercial and sport fisheries, provides flood control and acts as a reservoir for much of south Florida, and it provides natural habitat for a variety of fish, wading birds, reptiles and mammals. "We will be using a helicopter and tower boats to support a team of marine animal observers" explains Azam. "Wherever we race in the world, we recognise the need and embrace the value of protecting the environment and conserving natural resources."
The P1 fleet will arrive in Lake Okeechobee next Thursday, with racing starting at 1.30pm on Saturday.
