Famous surf spot in Wyoming experiencing rare staying power | GrindTV

You may not think of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, as the perfect locale for surfing, but the ridable waves churned up by the Snake River’s Lunch Counter Rapids just outside of town have been an open secret among surfers for years. The waves are produced when snowmelt and release activities from the Jackson Lake Dam cause water levels to rise and the river to flow 8,000 to 12,000 cubic feet per second.

During most years, the Lunch Counter wave is active for two to six weeks, usually from late May until June. But the wave is inconsistent, sometimes lying dormant for days at a time. This year, however, the folks in Jackson Hole have been experiencing a rare event, with the river producing consistently ridable waves for 40-plus days, and at the time of this writing, the waves are still pumping.  More; Famous surf spot in Wyoming experiencing rare staying power | GrindTV.com

Big Audiences for SUP at the Go Pro Mountain Games | SUP Magazine

Even for the most cynic of observer, it’d be hard to deny that standup paddling–as a competitive sport–has firmly taken hold from California to New Jersey to Florida and everywhere in between. If there is any doubt, that cynic need only look to Colorado, 14 hours from the nearest ocean–and the Go Pro Mountain Games as exhibit A in the sport’s evolution.

Some 60 paddlers pushed off the banks of Gore Creek Saturday morning for the SUP Sprint, a three-mile race through a beautiful mountain valley near Vail, Colorado. A section of river that had literally been forgotten by kayakers due to its flat character. Thanks to SUP, it’s again become a viable section for recreational Class II paddling.

The Payette River Games--Whitewater SUP's Biggest Purse | SUP Magazine

Whitewater SUP races continue to grow in popularity, and in the case of this June’s Payette River Games, the prize money keeps growing too.

June 21-23, Kelly’s Whitewater Park in Cascade, Idaho plays host to the Payette River Games with $14,000 in prize money up for grabs (gender equal), the largest purse in whitewater SUP history. “We just kept dreaming big and made it happen,” says KWP Board Member Jeff Banks. “Kelly’s is very fortunate to have the support of some very kind and generous individuals and companies. Our goal from the start (with this event) was to have the largest purse ever. This was designed to draw competitors from all over. We know it takes some effort to get here and we wanted to award people for their efforts.” More; The Payette River Games--Whitewater SUP's Biggest Purse | SUP Magazine

2013 Whitewater Kayaking Competition Season is underway- Mexico Creek Racing- Alseseca Race- Veracruz- Karma report

It is winter time in the Northern Hemisphere, but here in Veracruz we are so far south that winter is like a mild summer day in TN. Highs in the 80’s, lows in the 60’s- a mix of sun and clouds most days. However this is like a cloud forest area and the fog comes in fast and heavy at times. It will be sunny and clear in Tlapacoyan and by the time you get up to the put in a heavy fog could easily be covering everything making it darker and kind of eery looking, but also adds to the magic of the place. Yesterday, however, was a crystal clear day, the first of 2013, and it was race day.

The SUPerCharging Rise of Whitewater SUP

It’s pretty amazing and undeniable to see how fast stand up paddling has taken off. Especially in whitewater. While many have enjoyed it’s benefits along the coasts for decades, it’s meteoric rise in the rivers has far exceeded everyones expectations. In it’s beginnings we were forced to use inadequate equipment because there simply wasn’t anything else. But there was always a belief that once we had the “right boards” we could run rapids many thought impossible.

2012 Whitewater Grand Prix / Chile

Pucon, Chile – Thirty of the world’s best kayakers competed in a Whitewater Sprint race on Saturday, December 8th, in stage three of the 2012 Whitewater Grand Prix on the Rio Nevados in Central Chile. Isaac Levinson (USA) took first place among the men and Nouria Newman (FRA) placed first among the women for the 3rd race in a row.
The athletes now move to the Rio Futaleufu in the Patagonia Region for the final two events to be held on December 12th and 14th. The events will include a “Big Water Boatercross” and a “Big Water Enduro Race.” In addition to paddling this amazing river, the Whitewater Grand Prix hopes to increase awareness of the environmental threats facing the region, including a massive hydro electric dam on the Futaleufu (please see http://www.pressking.com/press-releases/Whitewater-Grand-Prix-raising-awareness-for-the-endangered-rivers-of-Chile-035494 )
Isaac Levinson now enters a 3-way tie for first place overall with Dane Jackson (USA) and Eric Deguil (FRA) who placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Stage Three event. Evan Garcia (USA) is in 4th and still in the running, only trailing by a few points with the possibility of catching up over the final two stages.

In the ‘Whitewater Sprint’, paddlers raced against the clock on a short stretch of class V whitewater on the Rio Nevados that included a long entry slide and a 20′ waterfall. This was the third event of the 5-stage, 14-day competition.
