2013-14 Invited Competitors Announced! | Mavericks Invitational

Season Opens on November 1, 2013
Mavericks Invitational© presented by GoPro has released the official list of competitors and alternates for the 2013-14 season.

On just 24 hours notice this winter season, 24 big-wave surfers will make the trek to Half Moon Bay, California, to test their skill and vie for the title of Champion of the Mavericks Invitational.

Competitors will face the dangerous elements of the frigid northern California waters in search of the perfect ride on massive waves.

This year’s list of nominees was determined by committee of five comprising Mavericks pioneer Jeff Clark, Big Wave World Tour founder Gary Linden, three-time Mavericks champion Darryl Virostko, and respected big wave surfers Greg Long and Shawn Dollar. The list of nominees was sent to last year’s competitors and alternates, who then voted for their top picks.

The 2013 GoPro IBA Arica Chilean Bodyboard Challenge

Ex Isla EL Alacrán, Arica, Friday 24th of May 2013 – Man on man Round 4 of the 2013 GoPro IBA Arica Chilean Challenge was completed today in powerful 8-10 foot waves at “El Gringo”. Though still big, the slight drop in swell and glassy conditions were much appreciated by the riders who made the most of the long barrels and big ramps the break had to offer.

Standout of the day was defending champion Dave Winchester (AUS). The Australian found a very determined Magno Passos(BRZ) who saw himself leading the heat after 2 back to back barrels.

However, in the closing minutes of the heat, Winchester found a big ramp on a left hander, launching a massive invert into the flats and was awarded an near perfect 9.38 points, catapulting the Australian into first place and giving him the highest combined heat score of the comp so far, 17.08 points.

Five of the best youth sailing teams in the world have qualified for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup following a grueling two-week Selection Series in San Francisco. The 12 crews, from 11 countries, were pushed to the limit as they fought for the right to compete in September's races.

National crews from Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland, made the cut to advance to the Red Bull Youth America's Cup where they will meet five crews supported by current America's Cup teams

Double Olympic Gold medalists Roman Hagara and Hans-Peter Steinacher, the Sports Directors for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup, made the selections after closely monitoring the teams on and off the water during the two back-to-back selection weeks. With the high talent level and extreme motivation of the crews, there were hard choices to make.

The IBA GoPro Pipe Challenge 2013 – The 30th Anniversary of Professional Bodyboarding

Friday, March 1, Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii - Ben Player (AUS) has taken out the 2013 IBA GoPro Pipe Challenge in pumping 8-10 foot waves at the Banzai Pipeline today, defeating defending champion, Jeff Hubbard (HAW) in second, Pierre-Louis (FRA) in third and multi talented Dave Hubbard (HAW) in fourth in the dying minutes of the final.

Player posted an excellent score of 8.75 early in the final for a deep set wave barrel on a left and finished it off with a looping roll. Hubbard answered back with a 7.75 and a 7.2 for two deep back to back barrels on draining left handers. The Frenchman and Dave Hubbard both managed to post a good score each 7.38 and 6.25 respectively, but were unable to lock in substantial second scoring rides. With only two minutes remaining, Player was searching for a 6.21 or better to take out the final. Scooping into a heaving Pipe set wave, the Australian negotiated his way through a long barrel and topped the wave off by launching an invert off the closeout to earn himself 7.38 out of a possible 10 points, rocketing him into first place as the buzzer sounded the end of the 2013 IBA GoPro Pipeline Pro.
