Pro Surfer Mark Healey Lands A Huge Wahoo While Spearfishing From A JetSki Off Oahu

Deep-water spearfishing for wahoo from a JetSki in Hawaii is a thrill I have yet to experience firsthand. Thankfully, I’m able to live vicariously through infamous big-wave surfer Mark Healey.

Hawaii is arguably the best place in the world to live if you’re an all-around waterman. Pro surfer Mark Healey was raised on Oahu’s North Shore, one of the best-known surfing destinations on planet Earth.

Growing up on the North Shore helped Mark Healey become one of the most legendary names in Big Wave Surfing but it also led him down a path of deep water spearfishing, free diving, sky diving, filmmaking, a job as a stuntman, and other extreme pursuits.

Mark Healey has a growing YouTube channel where he just uploaded a video of his latest deep-water wahoo spearfishing adventure. Healey left Oahu on a JetSki and returned with a massive Wahoo (fish), or as it’s locally known in Hawaii, an Ono.

The wahoo spearfishing action kicks off around the 3-minute point in the video. You can skip the intro and jump to the wahoo spearfishing by hitting the ‘play’ button below. Read more

Helicopter rescues Jet Ski destroyed by Giant Waves

As a big wave surfing legend, Kai Lenny sure must have seen some interesting things. Lenny has made big waves his passion, and this passion is not free of danger. If one wants to ride the big waves, one has to pay the price. This price might be broken bones, broken surfboards, or broken jet skis. The latter most happened with Kai Lenny, as he lost a beloved jet ski to the harsh tow at Jaws.  Fortunately, there are amazing Helicopter Pilots that can retrieve the carnage.

By Design: Examining the Jet Ski’s Giant Impact on Big Wave Surfing

“Oh, it’s had a humungous affect on the progression of big wave surfing over the past 30 years. No question. ”

This from Frank Quirarte, the renowned surf photographer and heavy water safety expert from Half Moon Bay, California who, having recently returned from an epic strike mission to Cortes Bank, definitely knows what he’s talking about. He isn’t referencing any particular surfboard design, breath-holding training method or inflatable vest. He’s not talking about different GoPro mounts, either. What Quirarte is pointing to as having arguably the single most significant influence on big wave surfing over the past few decades is the Jet Ski.

Peahi, Teahupo’o, Aussie bommies and slabs, Mullaghmore, Cortes Bank and, of course, Nazarè — all tackled at size with a hand on the throttle, and in each case completely redefining the parameters of what is considered to be rideable surf. Then there’s the paradigm shift when it comes to safety, with the introduction of precise teamwork and coordinated rescue protocol. Yet although having become ubiquitous in big wave lineups around the world, and the topic of much discussion and even controversy since gaining popularity in the early 1990s, the wider surfing world has been told virtually nothing about how and why these machines work, or, in fact, anything about their performance and design evolution. So let’s fix that right now. Read More

Traveling Around The World On A Jet Ski, Spanish Explorer Alvaro de Marichalar

Álvaro de Marichalar Sáenz de Tejada arrived in Belize as part of his world tour to circumnavigate the globe aboard the smallest craft in history. His tour commemorates the 500th anniversary of the World’s first circumnavigation and historic voyage by Ferdinand Magellan from 1519 – 1522. Having campaigned against plastic pollution for the past 40 years, Álvaro’s expedition is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of marine conservation. With support from the BTB, Alvaro arrived on Friday, December 2, in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. (www.FirstWorldTour.com)

World Explorer Alvaro Tejada arrives in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize

Having departed from the harbor in Chetumal, Mexico, Alvaro found his way to Belize as he arrived in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. Mr. Álvaro de Marichalar Sáenz de Tejada, holder of 14 world records, is recreating this voyage around the world to raise awareness for marine conservation, fighting plastic pollution and illegal fishing.

He states, "Urgent action is needed to protect the ocean. Our future is directly linked to the ocean and we cannot continue to treat it as a rubbish dump whilst fishing species to extinction.”

To celebrate and promote the First Tour of the World, Álvaro de Marichalar set sail three years ago from Seville on the historical date, August 10, 2019-1519. After sailing around Spain, Portugal and France without any support vessel, he then crossed the Atlantic ocean from southern Spain (Gibraltar) to Guadeloupe Island with the support of the French exploration ship YERSIN.

From Guadeloupe he continued navigating alone without a support ship, calling at the Caribbean islands all the way to Miami where he arrived on March 16, 2020. The pandemic stopped his expedition until February 19, 2022, when he was able to restart his Challenge, sailing along the Gulf of Mexico all the way to Bacalar.

Follow Alvaro's Journey: Click Here  https://my.yb.tl/NUMANCIA

God willing, Alvaro will continue to Panama to cross to the Pacific ocean coast and travel up all the way to Alaska where he will then cross over to Russia to continue along Asia and finally into the Mediterranean before arriving in Seville.

He has two years of navigation ahead of him. Alvaro sails alone and always on his feet aboard his boat measuring just three meters long named NUMANCIA. Álvaro's small boat has a maximum range of 200 nautical miles thanks to its supplementary fuel tank, which allows Álvaro to sail without a support boat. Álvaro makes stops at islands and coastal ports to refuel, get food, rest and repair his boat; when he is unable to reach land, Álvaro sleeps at sea. As he has very little space, he can only carry water, nuts and honey on board his small vessel. He also gives motivational lectures at fishermen's guilds, town halls, universities, schools, sailing clubs, prisons, hospitals and Navy stations.

About Alvaro:

* He is an entrepreneur in the real estate and telecommunications sector since he was 21 years old who founded TeleSat in 1983, the first Spanish company of satellite dishes.

* His passion is sailing. He has made forty maritime expeditions achieving 14 world records of navigation.
* Among other achievements, he sailed from Rome to New York in 2002. From Barcelona to Odessa, Ukraine in 2004 or from Hong Kong to Tokyo in 2006.

* For the last 40 years he has campaigned against plastic pollution in the sea and illegal fishing.

* Lecturer, writer and political activist who founded the first pan-European political movement called OmniaEuropa.

* Álvaro is producing a documentary series about his current Solo sailing around the World in the SMALLEST CRAFT in History.

Who’s Driving the Ski? This Is Where Big-Wave Rescue Teams Come From

Drake Stanley jets Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker to safety. Photo: Abe Alarcon.

Big waves have a certain mystique to them, at least when viewed from the beach or via the internet. When you get into the thick of things, with tons of water moving around, the mystique can fade pretty quickly. Now add the typical lineup chaos you might experience at a crowded break like Malibu or Pleasure Point, and shit gets downright horrifying.

With more and more people getting into surfing in recent years, surprisingly – or not – there’s also more and more people taking on the waves of Maverick’s, Jaws, and Nazaré. And unlike your local beachbreak, the crowds at big-wave locations can produce some truly life-threatening scenarios. I caught up with several rescue teams to learn about what these storied locations look like from the perspective of the rescuer, and the efforts being made in recent years to manage the crowds of chargers who come to test themselves on some of the biggest and gnarliest waves in the world. I basically wanted to find out where these rescue teams come from and why they do what they do. Read More

DANGEROUS WATERS TO RETURN IN SEASON 8 ABOARD KAWASAKI JETSKIS

Nearly four years ago, I penned an incredibly self-deprecating, overtly tongue-in-cheek, farcical review of the first six seasons of “Dangerous Waters.” The review itself went absurdly viral, becoming the single-most read article ever published on The Watercraft Journal and igniting a hilariously vitriolic firestorm within the comment section, dragging in cast members of the show and many of their incensed family members. Clearly, little to nobody got the joke (I blame the author).

As to be completely understood, the Covid pandemic of 2020 (scheduled to end around 2049) made international travel via personal watercraft all but an executable offense; so host, concept creator, director, producer, lead caterer and walrus wrangler Steven Moll has had ample time to prepare for the show’s eight season. In the interim, Moll continues to host adventure-seekers on abbreviated Alaskan PWC tours to considerable fanfare.

Alas, with some nations easing their travel restrictions Moll is confident that progress can pick up on filming the last leg of his global expedition. Recently, a promotional video was generated with Moll recapping the show’s decade of exploits thus far and opining towards the future aboard his Kawasaki Ultra LX JetSki. Published by our friends at Brisbane Kawasaki, please enjoy this teaser trailer for future “Dangerous Waters” episodes below.

Jeff Clark: The Pioneer Mavericks Surf Company

Jeff Clark is one of the most renowned and respected big wave surfers in the world, regarded by the surf community to be a member of a small group of pioneer watermen. Jeff is best known for successfully pioneering the massive waves of Mavericks alone for years before it was discovered by the big-wave surfing community. Mavericks, located south of San Francisco, is considered to be one of the most dangerous big waves on the planet.

In 1975, as a hard-charging 17 year-old, Clark first paddled out to this monstrous wave located more than ½ mile off the coast, in his own back yard near Half Moon Bay. For 15 years, he surfed this wave alone, with only his ability and determination to find his way. The spot was, until then, known as a navigational hazard. But Clark saw a perfect wave, and from there he set a course to pursue the ocean’s energy, a living laboratory for his many interests and innovations.

Labeled one of the “world’s best big-wave riders” by Surfer magazine in 1994 and among the 100 bravest people in the U.S. by PBS, Clark has been featured in the films Riding Giants, Step Into Liquid, Adventures in Wild California, Discovering Mavericks and many other films.

A third generation carpenter, Jeff shaped his first surfboard at the age of 12. He later shaped boards specifically designed for big wave surf, and specifically for the challenging technical wave at Mavericks. He changed big wave surfing by introducing the first four-fin big wave surfboards and riding them at Mavericks. The design worked so well that others immediately followed, and the four-fin setup is now the standard for big wave surfing worldwide. Jeff Clark Surfboards® custom stand-up paddleboard and surfboard designs incorporate Jeff’s designs to improve speed, performance and pure joy for anything from flat-water racing, downwind paddling, and surf conditions from two feet to 60 feet and all the way to spinning barrels.

Clark is also the founder of the famed Mavericks surf competition, an event that has put big wave surfing in mainstream sports and has launched the careers of surfers, photographers, water rescue teams and many others. He owns and operates the iconic Mavericks Surf Company® and Mavericks Paddle Sports in Princeton-by-the-Sea near Half Moon Bay, with his own line of Mavericks Surf® brand clothing and surf wear.

Clark’s knowledge of the ocean and dangerous waters has set him apart as an expert in water rescue, safety and water dynamics, leading to many achievements:

- Development of the Mavericks Water Patrol, a group of expert boat and jet ski operators trained in water rescue

- Certification by K38 Water Rescue and by Hawaiian Water Patrol Personal Water Craft (PWC) rescue

- Certification in Swift Water Rescue and service as Incident Commander at Kings River water rescue training

- Stunt and camera boat driver on open ocean set of a 20th Century Fox film Chasing Mavericks. His skill in navigating waves and dangerous waters has provided many filmmakers and photographers the opportunity to capture on film the power and beauty of the ocean.

- Research and development of the Clark inflatable life vest for big wave surfing and extreme watersports

- Development of performance surfboard technology for which he holds a US Patent

- Design and production of hydrofoils and boards for the next generation of wave riding

Jeff supports many other organizations that help our communities, particularly in the area of health and wellness, including St. Jude’s Children's Hospital, Sonoma Children’s Charities, Schultz Foundation, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Navy Seal Foundation, Boys and Girls Club of the Coastside, Coastside Hope, Half Moon Bay high school and middle school surf clubs.

While Jeff continues to surf and perform water rescue in big wave spots around the world, he is inspired by his three children and two grandchildren. He shares his motivational life lessons with fans and audiences across the country and through all industries.

Jeff remains as stoked as a grom to paddle out in any surf anywhere from two to twenty feet. He has found his wave.

MARICHALAR CONTINUES HIS GLOBAL JOURNEY ABOARD HIS PWC

We recently informed you about Alvaro De Marichalar’s journey across the globe where he began his voyage around Spain and to the Canary Islands.

We have just received word that he successfully made the long trip across the Atlantic Ocean and is in the Caribbean.  Alvaro has been trekking through Saint Barth’s island, Puerto Rico, and Cuba.

He plans to then journey through the Gulf of Mexico region across Florida, Texas, and down Mexico to the Panama Canal.  The next stage of his U.S. visit will take him up the west coast from California to Washington and then up to Alaska.

We imagine his riding gear will be dramatically changing as he nears the polar regions and eventually makes his way along the Alaska coast and across to Russia.

Marichalar then plans to continue back south along Japan and finally westward again on his journey back to Spain.  We wish him luck and be sure to stay tuned for more information on his historic 1519 world tour.

HAWAIIAN WATER PATROL ALL GROWN UP - Watercraft Journal

The Hawaiian Water Patrol (HWP) was founded by former Honolulu City and County lifeguards Terry Ahue and Brian Keaulana. What started out as a couple of guys on jet skis performing rogue water rescues, finally became a legal entity in the mid 1990’s. This was after scores of tickets were issued to Keaulana for launching his jet-ski. It didn’t matter that he had saved lives while off the Hawaiian Islands.

Ahue and Keaulana realized that they should engage in putting together a book of professional guidelines and standards. Prior to becoming an official organization the two men purchased a couple of skis and brought some other skilled lifeguards on board to run rescue at professional surfing events. Soon after, they built a rescue sled for transporting surfers and victims of water related incidents to safety. This method cut down on the amount of time it took to safely bring someone in from a dangerous situation.

The HWP was soon hailed as the top dog of water rescue and Hollywood approached them for stunt and safety coordination. The lifesavers even became members of the Stunt and Screen Actors Guild and that’s when their operation turned into a money maker!

According to a recent piece on surfline.com, Ahue and Keaulana became certified Hollywood stunt and safety coordinators. Technically, the group operates as “Ocean Risk and Management”, a subcontracted private business hired for any water event, film, or surf contest. The Hawaiian Water Patrol has come a long way since its rogue rescue days! The crew is always learning and staying up to date with and creating the latest rescue techniques. Like a fine wine, it gets better with age.

The Traditions of K38 Water Safety

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Shawn Alladio the founder of K38 several years back at an aircraft water rescue symposium in California. She had a booth setup for K38 and was more than willing to chat and share her immense knowledge of PWC rescue and water rescue in general. She is truly an expert in jet ski safety and rescue and all-around Waterwoman.

Enjoy her story of K38 shared from LiveJournal December 27, 2008

Celebrating Two Decades of Service 1989-2009

K38’s namesake comes from 38 Klicks south of the American Border in California. The company name wasn’t intended to have any meaning that could be generalized or hoped for. It was to be a standalone icon that referenced a creative free spirit outside of the confines of what society accepts for how ‘things get done’.  I have a personal saying ‘We make shit happen’, sometimes it is that simple.  Cliches often referred this to ‘outside of the box’ thinking when in reality, it is a complete never-ending circle instead.

The K38 varied background was inspired by Shawn Alladio, of course I am referring to myself, a competitive Jet Ski racer, and mother, from the United States. My lifelong personal experiences and influences led to the creation of a variety of training programs since my first Jet Ski ride in 1979. A decade later I began instruction to both recreational, racers and public safety personnel. I  ventured out and worked globally in a vast scope of weather, water and personal watercraft and personalities, some favorable and some adversarial. I have amassed more water time under multiple uses globally par none. I’ve been blessed to work with our nation’s military elite, law enforcement, lifeguards, fire service, heavy water, PWC competitions, and many boating safety associations.

Not limited to training, K38 is also active in legislation and supporting boating education, safety and enforcement and the co-creator of thousands of training programs. Since then the company has expanded globally with International Affiliates the message is clear, The K38 Way of Training is the PWC standard. Our goal is to revolutionize lifesaving and recreational boating using these unique small powered craft called, ‘personal watercraft’.  I have received awards, yes.  That is not what motivates me, I believe we can all change the world, if we apply ourselves, this is how I determine to do just that, maybe not for you, but for someone down the line in an ocean adrift calling for help.  I hope this is what our training will do for others, my heart believes.

The K38 Way of Training

The foundational contributions, combined with the advancement of Personal Watercraft designs and evolution were a ‘process’ of related events, mainly by trial and multiple errors.  They have all been personal and yes it has been costly. Just as personal watercraft was simpler in features and function early on, so was the K38 Way of Training. K38’s training programs evolved and adjusted in concert with the expansion of the popularity and multiple uses that were being created as these small boats found their way into mainstream applications. We have a saying ‘Every Beach Within Reach’.  Due to this action we realize our level of risk oftentimes is extreme due to the designs of the craft we employ as being a very ‘forgiving’ boat.   Our mindset is our measured success. We must go with careful consideration of our risk and respect our equipment and the environment, let alone compassion for our students learning needs, victims, patients and cultures, and most importantly, the survivors of tragic circumstances.

K38 Colors

Symbolism itself crafts our imagination. Our image is built upon focused colors that represent a reminder of our shortcomings within our human condition. Tempered with our desire to be of service to others, we seek balance between extremes, even our environment. Without realizing both aspects of our potential, humility would be an unattainable necessity. But what is humility without strength? Yet the strong man or woman must go. I will go.

RED

Red is our Blood, it is our passion that drives us to lead others with knowledge that will and can save lives, it is the danger we manage.

BLACK

Our Black is our symbol of our Collective Experience; it is our ‘wisdom’.

WHITE

White is our symbol of Security in Truth, it is our faith.

K38 SYMBOLS

Our vessel symbolizes ‘movement and teamwork’. Together we are strong, but divided our measures create a heightened risk. We recognize that is one movement or decision is not addressed with security, we shall find ourselves managing a mishap, further spreading our resources and safety. Our symbols and colors reflect our choices and our desire for safety, ‘safety means danger’. One must go with confidence.

FLAG

Our signature K38 logo centered on a Red field; symbolizes our unity as a family, regardless of language or culture. The banded circle encasing the inset logo symbolizes our Earth and its waters we ply. The trademark ‘hand reaching out’ needs no further explanation, it speaks for itself.

All Hands on Deck

“Nobody Dies!” -  K38 instructors join hands forming a circle and facing one another, arms outstretched. This is done before and after trainings or expeditions. It is simple, poignant and uncomfortable. This cry we share is our committed reminder that our safety is our first priority:  ‘Nobody Dies!’ K38! What is your occupation? RESCUE! Keep Moving, Keep Thinking, never stop moving…..

K38 Loyalty
The Life You Save May Be Your Own

Our Motto embodies the risk that all lifesavers take when serving others in a time of peril. Each expedition or experience is cumulative, enabling our level of commitment, and courage to be tempered with accountability while underway. This process of earned abilities, does not match to simply training methods as the absolute focus. One must be tested and trialed to truly know what we are made of in the moment of applied pressures. Our mission is to come home safely to our families, and hopefully we can render assistance to those who are in need, so they too come home.

K38 is represented in 14 countries, with deep respect, gratitude and love I thank these men who follow my lead and lead so well themselves.  2009 we celebrate gentlemen, we will earn then next 20 years ahead, reuniting families and keeping our water safety personnel professional and focused.  I praise you for your dedication and sacrifices, only of which we truly understand.

God watch over us, may we choose well enough in any given moment and have understanding of our level of desire that matches our capabilities as well as our limitations. Hallelujah.
