Tyler Wright Claims 2013 Roxy Pro Gold Coast Over Sally Fitzgibbons

SNAPPER ROCKS, Queensland/Australia (Saturday, March 9, 2013) -Tyler Wright (AUS), 18, has claimed the 2013 Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover over Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 22, in punchy two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at the primary venue of Snapper Rocks.

Tyler Wright (AUS), 18, has claimed the Roxy Pro Gold Coast

Event No. 1 of 7 on the 2013 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT), the Roxy Pro Gold Coast enjoyed a down-to-the-wire finish today with Wright and Fitzgibbons going head-to-head in a fiercely-fought Final.

Despite Fitzgibbons holding the lead for the majority of the heat, Wright secured a wave in the dying moments and tore it apart for a 9.20 out of a possible 10, taking the heat lead and the win.

“I don’t even know what to say right now,” Wright said. “I wasn’t even thinking out there. I was singing to myself and when I came in, my sister said ‘I was singing right along with you’. That little wave came in and hugged the bank and I just left it all on the wave. To get the score and the win like that, it’s incredible.”

Ron Jon Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Junior Kicks Off in Clean Conditions

COCOA BEACH, Florida/USA (Friday, March 8, 2013) – Opening day of the inaugural Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Ron Jon Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Junior commenced today in clean two-to-four foot waves at Sheppard Beach Park and dove in to two rounds of men’s competition while narrowing the women’s field down to the Quarterfinals.

Peru’s Alonso Correa was one to watch on opening day of the Ron Jon Quiksilver Pro Junior.

Stop No. 3 on the Men’s ASP North America Pro Junior Series and No. 2 for the women, the Ron Jon Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Junior plays a crucial role in surfers’ qualification campaigns for the ASP World Junior Tour.

Alonso Correa (Lima, PER) was one international to shine on the opening day of the Ron Jon Quiksilver Pro Junior. Correa attacked with a solid aerial game on his forehand and was equally successful with his backhand combinations.

“I’m trying to get some points on the ASP Pro Junior Series and trying to gain experience surfing internationally,” Correa said. “These waves are totally different than at home, but the waves were fun in the morning. I was lucky to get that right in my second heat, it was perfect.”

Noah Schweizer (New Smyrna Beach, FL), led the East Coast charge on opening day of competition, posting some of the day’s highest scores on the running righthanders on offer at Cocoa Beach.
“This is actually my first time surfing in Cocoa Beach,” Schweizer said. “It’s a cool town, but I usually stay in New Smyrna. The waves are kind of fun. There are a couple of ramps on the rights.”
Schweizer broke on to the ASP North America Pro Junior Series last season, and is hoping to break in to the top regional ranks in 2013.

JOBOS, Isabella, Puerto Rico (Sunday, February 10, 2013) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star 2013 Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico presented by seepuertorico.com returned to Jobos Beach for the second consecutive day, completing Round 3 in front of a maxed out local crowd.

Brett Barley (Buxton, NC), 23, kicked off his Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico campaign with a bang, earning the event’s highest single-wave score of 9.50 out of 10 for a combination of powerful backhand turns on a long righthand wall.

“We were all scratching at the start and fortunately everyone else caught waves beforehand and I was in position for that wave,” Barley said. “I was just out there by myself and it just came to me. I knew it was going to be a good one. It lined up the whole way and allowed me to get a couple of turns off. It’s nice to start off the heat with a good wave. I didn’t think it was a 9.50, but I was pretty stoked with it.”
