For 24 of the world’s premier big-wave surfers, Friday was tumultuous and at times harrowing, but a day they would not have traded for anything.

The waves were massive, the drops almost sheer, the wipeouts brutal, and in the end Grant “Twiggy” Baker stood alone as champion of the Body Glove Mavericks Invitational at notorious Mavericks outside of Half Moon Bay, California.

2013-14 Invited Competitors Announced! | Mavericks Invitational

Season Opens on November 1, 2013
Mavericks Invitational© presented by GoPro has released the official list of competitors and alternates for the 2013-14 season.


On just 24 hours notice this winter season, 24 big-wave surfers will make the trek to Half Moon Bay, California, to test their skill and vie for the title of Champion of the Mavericks Invitational.

Competitors will face the dangerous elements of the frigid northern California waters in search of the perfect ride on massive waves.

This year’s list of nominees was determined by committee of five comprising Mavericks pioneer Jeff Clark, Big Wave World Tour founder Gary Linden, three-time Mavericks champion Darryl Virostko, and respected big wave surfers Greg Long and Shawn Dollar. The list of nominees was sent to last year’s competitors and alternates, who then voted for their top picks.

Ocean Driven is a gripping and unforgettable true story about perseverance that guides viewers of all ages to believe in and follow their dreams. 

When South African Chris Bertish won the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational in 2010, he conquered the largest surf in paddle-in competition history. Now Bertish is riding an even bigger wave as the subject of this exciting full-length film.

Greg Long Crowned Big Wave World Tour Champ

Greg Long has been crowned the 2012/2013 Big Wave World Tour champion.  The fourth season of the Big Wave World Tour has successfully been completed. When Long arrived in Peru this past summer it was clear by the look in his eyes that he was there to win it all.

Greg would take his dedication, focus and training and make every final of the 2012/2013 season. His consistency throughout the year was nothing short of spectacular.
 
He placed second at the Billabong Pico Alto event in Peru, third place at the Mavericks Invitation in Half Moon Bay, California and second finish at the Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic in Lincoln City, Oregon.
 
By the end of the season, Greg would finish nearly 1000pts ahead of his fellow competitors. "It is my honor to pass the torch to another great young man, Mr. Greg Long", stated Peter Mel.
 
Greg Long was followed in the 2012/2013 Big Wave World Tour rankings by Jamie Sterling, Carlos Burle, Peter Mel and Ken Collins.

Peter Mel wins 2013 Mavericks Invitational Big-Wave Surf Championship

20 January, Half Moon Bay, CA —Peter Mel celebrated a long awaited victory on Sunday: A Mavericks big-wave championship title.

The La Selva Beach native and veteran Santa Cruz surfer was emotional while holding up his surfboard trophy and soaking in the realization that he had just won the final round of the 2013 Mavericks Invitational.

Alex Martins shredded into 2nd place while smooth, mechanicaly-flawless rider Greg Long clinched 3rd. Santa Cruz' Zach Wormhoudt placed 4th, Mark Healey came in 5th, and Shawn Dollar of Santa Cruz placed 6th.

Mel was won of the oldest surfers in the lineup and one of 10 surfers from Santa Cruz that competed.

Thousands of spectators flocked to a festival outside the Oceano Hotel in Half Moon Bay to watch 24 of the world’s most elite big-wave surfers compete. Tickets were already sold-out by 9 a.m.

Chris Bertish - The SUP Crossing, The Fastest Self Propelled Trans-Atlantic


The most arduous, amazing and extreme journey ever attempted on a Stand Up Paddle board!

Over 2007 Miles/3225km, across the Atlantic from Dakar, Senegal to Camocim, in Northern Brazil, for the first ever Trans-Atlantic solo-attempt in December 2013.

Chris Bertish is a 37 year old Cape Town watersports champion who is an accomplished waterman across several watersports disciplines such as sailing, swimming, windsurfing, kite-surfing, big wave surfing and stand up paddling.

Chris has won major big wave surfing events against all odds, and is used to turning adversity into opportunity - as he did when he won the 2010 Mavericks Big Wave Championship, held in the biggest surf recorded in the history of the sport, merely hours after touching down from a 42hour flight from South Africa - on a borrowed board!

Chris has also recently returned back from competing in the first ever ISA SUP World Champs, where he represented RSA in the distance/ flat water racing discipline, where he finished in 9th in the world.

Amazing footage paired with real life accounts of the dangers of the wave, "Discovering Mavericks" is set to release on February 26, 2013.

IT’S ON! MAVERICKS INVITATIONAL SET FOR SUNDAY, JANUARY 20


Contest organizers for the Mavericks Invitational 2012-2013 presented by GoPro, have confirmed that the world’s premier big wave surf contest will take place on Sunday, January 20, 2013 in Pillar Point, Half Moon Bay, CA.

“The waves are going to be insane, the weather is going to be beautiful, and the level of surfing will break new ground,” said Mavericks Invitational Contest Director Jeff Clark.

This is the first time in three years that contest-worthy waves are headed to the
legendary surf break. Stormsurf forecaster Mark Sponsler stated, “This is looking like the best opportunity we’ve had in quite a few years with great conditions for running the contest.”
