Ocean racing worlds | Royal Canoe Club

The inaugural World Ocean Racing World Championships (that’s ‘surf ski racing’ to the uninitiated) passed off successfully in Vila do Conde, Portugal this weekend. Above can see a report from the event.

There were three races:
1. Downwind Single Ski – 22.5 km (World Championship Race)
2. Downwind Double Ski – 22.5 km (World Championship Demo Race)
3. Life Saving Knock out

There was considerable British interest, with UK representatives including Scott Hynds, Simon Dark, Jenny Williams, Glenn Eldridge, Mark Ressel, Ian Robinson, Nigel Jones, Colin Smith, Brendon Stead and former multiple marathon kayak world champion Ivan Lawler. The South Africans dominated numerous classes – with Australia in hot pursuit – Sean Rice won the men’s singles with Tim Jacobs second and Cory Hill in third. The results are here.

Meanwhile, we can but admire the number of boats on the start line and on the way back to the finish (as pictured)…
