Race: Daytona Beach 15 June 2013 - 16 June 2013 - P1 Superstock

As the P1 SuperStock and AquaX teams rolled into Daytona on Friday, water conditions were perfect for Round 2 of the US SuperStock Championship, with the forecast for the weekend looking like ideal southwesterly winds, perfect for dampening the surf.

Early on Saturday morning the pilots woke to a completely different weather story, with the wind blowing from the northeast and pounding the beach and race course a huge surfing swell kicked up making racing impossible.

Experienced racer and P1 spokesman, Martin Sanborn commented: "The rough and unpredictable seas were a real cause for concern. To make matters worse the conditions at the inlet were so severe that the rescue craft were unable to even make it to the race course, 12 miles away from the launch point."

"Compounding the situation was the interval of the swell, and the complete lack of any predictable rhythm which would have made racing very hit and miss. After launching two offshore powerboats to survey the conditions at first hand, it was decided that it was unsafe to allow the SuperStock boats to race."

On Sunday morning, the conditions only slightly improved and after another on-water inspection, and with the forecast being for it to worsen through the day, the decision was made to cancel racing.
Martin added: "Sunday was better, to the point that there was more of a rhythm to the swell, but still up to 8' waves at less than 4 seconds apart."

Fortunately, the surf conditions allowed the inaugural P1 AquaX USA event to go ahead. The riders battled the conditions, many taking a dip or two during the race as they attacked the unpredictable sea, putting on a fantastic show for the host hotel and their guests.

The missed races will be rescheduled across the next two SuperStock US events in Pahokee 19 – 21 July and Cocoa Beach 16-18 August.
