AC72 sails in good breeze for racing / Emirates Team New Zealand

Emirates Team New Zealand completed its fourth day sailing the AC72 on San Francisco Bay today in a wide range of breeze and conditions.

The team ran through some training exercises and a couple laps of the America’s Cup race course in what tactician Ray Davies described as “near perfect conditions”.

“We had a really nice 22 knots of breeze blowing on the course area and it all just felt like perfect conditions to be racing the AC72s. The boat felt really good.”

With the practice racing completed, the AC72 and following chase boats relocated down to the South Bay to continue with the testing program where the breeze offered a brief example of the volatility of the wind in San Francisco.

“While we were a long way down in the South Bay, one minute it was 14 knots the next it was 30 knots, so it got a little hairy,” said skipper Dean Barker, “But we kept things under control and got the boat back to the dock with no issues at all, so we are happy.”

As with each day sailing before, the team continues to learn more about the boat and the venue with each hour on the water.

10 Tips on How to Keep SUP Fresh & Fun | SUP How-tos & Techniques

SAN DIEGO, California - Do you remember the first time you felt the glide of a stand up paddleboard? ·Whether you were alone or hitching a ride on another persons board, there was almost certainly a moment when you thought it was just about one of the greatest experiences you have ever had!·From that moment forward, all you could do was think about what you needed to do to somehow get your hands on your first board and paddle. ·You swore you'd be on the water every day and that stand up paddle would be a priority in your life.

Some stand up paddlers definitely know how to keep SUP fresh and fun!
Photo Submitted by Ness Knight in the Supconnect Photo Contest.

Somehow, however, the past few months have resulted in less time on the water than desired.  Life gets busy and making time to get out and stand up can sometimes seem difficult.  Perhaps you don't want to paddle alone, or your equipment has become damaged.  Sometimes less paddling just means that the weather has been cold and you're waiting for 10 more degrees to show up on the thermometer.  Or maybe, just maybe, your enthusiasm has actually wained a little bit.  If this is the case then here are some tips that might just help you fall in love with SUP all over again!  More; 10 Tips on How to Keep SUP Fresh & Fun | SUP How-tos & Techniques

Epic Ocean Adventure Coming Your Way

The World’s biggest, meanest and fastest powerboats are roaring across UK seas this June 8th to the 11th and the organisers have just announced the final details on how the public can be at the heart of the action. The good news is that every part of it is completely free.

This is the ‘Venture Cup Prologue’ – the World’s longest, toughest and most prestigious powerboat race – which is cutting it’s teeth this Summer in UK waters in advance of an epic adventure from London to Monte-Carlo in June of 2014.

Starting from Tower Bridge in London on Saturday June 8th, national and international teams will put their technical excellence, bravery and endurance to the test as they battle the elements for honours over four days. Competitors will be forced to hammer across, through and sometimes under the waves in a brutal bone-shaking marathon, pushing themselves and their machines to the limit. Boats and crews alike will endure snap-forces in excess of 40g, with hearts beating at over 150bpm, hour after hour, wave after wave.

Hoosier Support for Summer Racing | OffshoreOnly.com – Powerboating Online

It had to be more than five years ago now, but the conversation is still vivid. Photographer Paul Kemiel called with some “very exciting” news to share, at least according to him. Kemiel, who has been shooting boat racing for more than 30 years, informed me that his hometown of Michigan City, Ind., would be hosting an offshore race in the summer of 2009—early August to be more precise. He sounded animated and passionate about the potential turnout by both race boats and spectators.

Not quite sure how a race in Lake Michigan off the Indiana shoreline would be received, I agreed to share the news with our readers and asked Kemiel if he would provide post-race coverage of the Super Boat International (SBI) event for Powerboat magazine. He ended up writing a great article that tied in his personal connection with the event’s successful debut and the impact it had on the local economy.  Read more; Hoosier Support for Summer Racing | OffshoreOnly.com – Powerboating Online

ASP Announces Acquisition of Big Wave World Tour

LOS ANGELES, California/USA (Wednesday, May 29, 2013) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) International is pleased to announce the acquisition of the global Big Wave World Tour (BWWT), with arrangements for support in 2013 and formal sanctioning commencing in 2014.

“We are very pleased to have finalized the deal between the ASP and the Big Wave World Tour,” Paul Speaker, ASP CEO, said. “The competitors on the BWWT are some of the fiercest and most-respected watermen on the planet and we are eager about the opportunity to take their tour to the next level. This arrangement also allows the world’s best surfers on the ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) to compete in big-wave events moving forward. 2014 will be an exciting year on all fronts.”

Currently servicing six international big wave events in Pichilemu/Chile, Punta Hermosa/Peru, Lincoln City/Oregon, Half Moon Bay/California, Baja California/Mexico and Punta Galea/Spain the Big Wave World Tour was founded by Gary Linden and pits the world’s best big wave surfers against the elements in some of the most intense venues on the planet.

“The Big Wave World Tour is thrilled to be joining the ASP family,” Gary Linden said. “ASP run the best events in the world and we’re thrilled to have their support and guidance as we continue to build the platform of big wave surfing. We also look forward to seeing some of the world’s best surfers tackle some of the world’s biggest waves in the coming years.”

The new-found arrangement between the ASP and the BWWT will allow for top ASP surfers such as 11-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 41, reigning ASP World Champion Joel Parkinson (AUS), 32, Hawaiian phenom John John Florence (HAW), 20, amongst others to join respected BWWT surfers like Greg Long (USA), 28, Grant Baker (ZAF), 40, and Carlos Burle (BRA), 45, in competition with waves in the 25-foot-and-above range.

“The Big Wave World Tour is a great addition to the Association of Surfing Professionals,” Kieren Perrow, ASP Commissioner, said. “It adds another dimension to the sport and will make it significantly easier for ASP Top 34 surfers to compete in big-wave events. We have the utmost respect for the athletes on the BWWT and we really look forward to working with them.”

The acquisition of the Big Wave World Tour will complement the current ASP tours of the men’s and women’s ASP World Championship Tour, the ASP World Junior Tours, ASP World Longboard Tours and regional tours around the globe.

The Big Wave World Tour is currently on high alert for a possible run of the Quiksilver Ceremonial at Pichilemu in Chile in the coming days.

Grant, Baxter Win French SUP Race Cup | SUP Magazine

The unofficial start to the European racing season kicked off with last weekend’s SUP Race CUP in St. Maxime, France. Travis Grant of Australia and Maui’s Connor Baxter dominated the two-day event that featured a technical sprint race and long distance race.

Photo: Michel Terrien

Saturday’s rough conditions delayed the start of sprint race for hours, but after some tough decision-making by the event organizers, paddlers took to the water. Due to the unfavorable conditions, what was supposed to be a 7-km race was reduced to 5km, and after being put on hold for hours, paddlers were ready to blow some steam and go to battle. Connor Baxter continued his impressive winning streak, taking down Travis Grant and other elite paddlers in the four-lap course.  Read more; Grant, Baxter Win French SUP Race Cup | SUP Magazine

Super Boats Race To Alabama for Thunder On The Gulf | Super Boat International

Orange Beach, AL (May 28, 2013) – Super Boat International (SBI) is excited to return to the Alabama coastline for the 10th Annual Thunder On The Gulf Super Boat Grand Prix. May 31st through June 2nd, teams will arrive and prepare their boats for the ‘Thunder On The Gulf’ event. This is the third stop on the SBI National Series race circuit that begins in April and ends in early October in Clearwater, Florida with the National Championship event.

Alabama hosts one of the most fun-filled and exciting races on the national circuit as they roll out the red carpet for SBI race teams and fans. The beachfront communities are always alive with summertime activity, as people from all around the country come to vacation along the beautiful beaches. It’s this same time of year that vacationers have booked their tickets to come stay and watch some of the most exciting offshore powerboats in the world.

Long Live Qatar | OffshoreOnly.com – Powerboating Online

After 17 years of following offshore powerboat racing, I’m under no illusions about what the sport can become. Combine the expense for competitors with the lack of return for them and their sponsors, the intra-sport political bickering and an often-weak racing product for fans and it is no surprise that the sport remains—at best—obscure.

The fact is offshore racing is a rollercoaster with ups and downs, turns, twists, dips and even the occasional loop. If you want a different ride, you follow a different sport.

So my take right now? Offshore racing is entering one of the best cycles it’s had since the late 1990s and early 2000s.  Read more; Long Live Qatar | OffshoreOnly.com – Powerboating Online

Teams get down to some serious talking / Emirates Team New Zealand

Emirates Team New Zealand’s rules advisor Russell Green blogs about moving goal posts and the negotiations ahead.

Last Wednesday was my first day working in San Francisco and we were called to a meeting late in the afternoon by regatta director, Iain Murray, who presented his recommendations from the work of the Review Committee. Present were the key members of the teams, the event authority and Louis Vuitton.

Iain Murray, who distributed the report and then worked through the document explaining all the relevant points, looked tired. It was clear there had been some long hours worked by Review Committee in the previous six days, an amazing job in such a short time.

The teams, especially Artemis, had various questions but there was little time to digest the information as former Oracle Racing COO Stephen Barclay, who now heads the Event Authority (ACEA), revealed the document had already been made public. It was straight back to the base for Grant Dalton to talk to the team about the content and how we would deal with the upcoming work which, inevitably, be required.

Update from Paul Cayard / Artemis Racing / America’s Cup

Artemis Racing is back to work. We will only race if our sailing team believes they are safe racing AC72s. This confidence will be dependent on many criteria, one of the most important of which is the new safety criteria and rules changes that the America’s Cup organizers and competitors will adopt.

© Artemis Racing / Sander van der Borch

Regarding the accident on San Francisco Bay, Artemis Racing is still in the process of conducting its own internal review. I understand that frustration exists out there because questions remain about the accident. It was, however, a complex event. We want to give it the time, respect and professionalism it deserves, so we thank everyone for their continued patience during this process.

Mitch Coleborn Wins Quiksilver Saquarema Prime

SAQUAREMA, Rio de Janeiro / Brazil (Sunday, May, 26, 2013) - Rippable waves in the 3-5 foot range (1-1.5 meters) were on hand at Itauna Beach, Rio de Janeiro as Mitchel Coleborn (AUS), 26, earned his first career ASP victory by defeating Marc Lacomare (FRA), 22, by a score of 17.60 to 15.67 in the Final on Sunday at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola in Brazil.

Mitch Coleborn, winner of the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime.

With his result today, Coleborn earned U$ 40,000 in prize money and 6,500 points to catapult him up to number 14 on the ASP World Ranking. At the Sunday, there were still plenty of high scoring waves throughout the day that included some long barrels, big turns and even a 10-point ride of the Lacomare in final heat.

Quantum Racing win 52 SUPER SERIES first trophy regatta in Barcelona

Winning the final race in Barcelona Quantum Racing, skippered by Ed Baird with Terry Hutchinson as tactician, contributed all that they could to lifting the Conde de Godo Trophy regatta for the second year in a row, but with long time event leaders Azzurra slumping to a dramatic seventh place at the same time, the American team did have a little unexpected assistance from their main rivals.

Azzurra went into Sunday’s only race with a lead of two points on Quantum Racing and four on Niklas Zennström’s Rán Racing, but the defending 2012 52 SUPER SERIES champions Azzurra had only a modest first beat and then were penalised for fouling Interlodge at the spreader mark spinnaker hoist.

Required to take a penalty turn Azzurra’s hopes of winning the regatta evaporated at that point. There was no coming back for them as Quantum Racing were already half a mile down the first run, sailing securely and confidently to take the winning gun and with it the Conde de Godo Trophy and draw first blood on the 2013 52 SUPER SERIES.

Azzurra under pressure - 52 SUPER SERIES

Although Azzurra lead into the final day of the Conde de Godo Trophy regatta after two fast, challenging races in fresh SE’ly winds Saturday, the defending 52 SUPER SERIES champions remain under consistently high pressure from Quantum Racing.

Indeed the American team got the better of Azzurra on the final run today, inflicting a small but perhaps telling psychological blow when they wrestled second place on the last gybe of the at the end of a fabulous, high speed duel which had raged back and forth from the last windward turn.

Winning the first race of the day with a significant margin over Austin Fragomen’s Interlodge, Azzurra looked to have gained control of Quantum Racing during the first beat of the second race and were set to consolidate their three points lead. But it went to the wire though, with the two gybing side by side for the finish line.

East Coast Paddleboard Championships 2013 - Daytona Beach, FL

Be a part of Daytona Beach history at the 16th annual East Coast Paddle Board & SUP Surf Championship at Daytona Beach Pier this Summer. You can participate in paddle races, the SUP surf competition, a swimming race or just enjoy the events and sites on the pier deck or beach. Daytona is the origination of the East Coast paddleboarding as we know it today. In the late 1920s, Tom Blake, a nationally renowned swimming champion, first came up with a surfboard designed on an airplane wing’s spar-construction principles. The tradition continues with the resurgence of the sport through paddle boarding here on the East Coast. And, the Old Daytona Beach Ocean Festival is where you will find the winner of the Tom Blake award for this year's race.

Top Seeds Revel in Improved Conditions at Quiksilver Saquarema Prime

SAQUAREMA, Rio de Janeiro / Brazil (Friday, May, 24, 2013) - After having to face extreme conditions yesterday, surfers were met with waves in the 4-6 foot (1.5-2 meters) range and light winds throughout the day at Itauna Beach for the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola. Despite the decrease in size, the athletes kept on pumping out high scores as the higher seeds continued to qualify into the later rounds.

Jeremy Flores (FRA), 25, earned the day’s high scores at Saquarema.

Last years event winner, Matt Wilkinson (AUS), guaranteed a spot into the Round of 16 with his victory today while fellow WCT surfer Jeremy Flores (FRA) also advanced while receiving an 18.30 (out of a possible 20) for the highest heat-wave total of the day.

“The conditions have completely changed since yesterday,” said Jeremy Flores. “I’m happy to be doing well in the last couple of contests and I feel confident for the next heats.”

The 2013 GoPro IBA Arica Chilean Bodyboard Challenge

Ex Isla EL Alacrán, Arica, Friday 24th of May 2013 – Man on man Round 4 of the 2013 GoPro IBA Arica Chilean Challenge was completed today in powerful 8-10 foot waves at “El Gringo”. Though still big, the slight drop in swell and glassy conditions were much appreciated by the riders who made the most of the long barrels and big ramps the break had to offer.

Standout of the day was defending champion Dave Winchester (AUS). The Australian found a very determined Magno Passos(BRZ) who saw himself leading the heat after 2 back to back barrels.

However, in the closing minutes of the heat, Winchester found a big ramp on a left hander, launching a massive invert into the flats and was awarded an near perfect 9.38 points, catapulting the Australian into first place and giving him the highest combined heat score of the comp so far, 17.08 points.

Azzurra hang on to Barcelona lead as Rán and Gladiator win races - 52SUPER SERIES

While it was Tony Langley’s Gladiator and Niklas Zennström’s Rán Racing which ran out as best scoring teams from an exciting second day of racing at Barcelona’s Conde de Godo Trophy for the 2013 52 SUPER SERIES, both landing a first and third apiece, Azzurra still returned to the Réal Club Nautico Barcelona with their overall one point lead intact.

Azzurra suffered on the final run of the first race with a malfunctioning primary winch, losing a potential third race victory to Rán Racing just at the finish line on the final gybe. Quantum Racing kept themselves in contention with a great recovery in an electrifying, breezy, bumpy, second race when they fought back from being over the start line early to cross the finish second behind Gladiator.

The second race showcased the 52’s at their sparkling best. Crews arrived ashore wet, chilly and exhausted after the brisk 22-25kts winds, but after an afternoon of high octane downwind sailing in building swells few had many reasons to grumble.

SAQUAREMA, Rio de Janeiro / Brazil (Thursday, May, 23, 2013) - Competitors were put to the test in extremely challenging conditions on Thursday for the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola at Itauna Beach in Rio de Janeiro. The second day of competition started off with heavy waves in the 6-8 foot range (2-3 meters) with larger sets throughout the day reaching 10+ feet plus. Although the initial heats were run in fair weather with light offshore winds, conditions became increasingly demanding with huge, foamy closeouts, broken boards, strong currents, nasty wipeouts and consistent onshore winds from the southwest.

Gabriel Medina (BRA), 19, surfed a near-perfect 19-point heat total despite the wild conditions on offer at Saquarema today.

Despite the conditions, the level of performance was extremely high as the athletes kept pumping out big scores during a lengthy day of competition. Gabriel Medina (BRA), picked up where he left off yesterday, pulling off the day’s highest scores of a 9.20 and a 9.83 for a 19.03 points (out of a possible 20) heat-wave total.

Azzurra are Barcelona’s best as 52 SUPER SERIES opens in Europe

Just one point separates regatta leaders Azzurra from second placed Quantum Racing after three races at Barcelona’s showcase Conde de Godo regatta, the first event of the European season of the 2013 52 SUPER SERIES.

In breezes which built from 10 knots for Race 1 to a sparkling 16-18 knots for the third heat, it was a day marked by tit-for-tat racing between the two rivals with the current 52 SUPER SERIES champions laying down the early marker by winning Race 1 comfortably.

Quantum Racing countered by winning the second race with Azzurra third to leave the top duo on equal points going into Race 3. The team which races under the flag of the Yacht Club Smeralda then executed another great pin end start, a near facsimile of their Race 1 opening, and were well clear of second placed Quantum Racing by the finish line.

The differences between the leading two boats were small across the day. Quantum Racing’s strategy in Race 1 did not work as planned and they rounded each mark in sixth but staged a valuable recovery on the final run, using the building breeze to good effect, to just steal a useful third on final approach to the finish line. After that they looked increasingly strong.
Ed Baird, skipper-helm of Quantum Racing recalled:“ We made an assumption about the first race and stuck to our plan but the plan didn’t quite work out but we were fortunate at the end of that race that the breeze came up from behind and we were able to get into some good situations and we were able to get third. We rounded sixth in most of the mark roundings so we were lucky there.”

Well executed starts at the pin end of the start line twice were the foundations for Azzurra to build on. The number of sails allowed over the season is limited. With their programme foregoing new sails in the USA in order to bring on line a new inventory for the European season Azzurra were notably quick in key situations:

“ The reality is that we didn’t use new sails for Miami. We suffered a little for that. We decided to keep all our new buttons (each counted sail has a registered button) for European season. So we have an all new fresh inventory here. We are going a little quicker and so can hang in there when we get in some tough positions.” Guillermo Parada, Azzurra’s skipper explained.

For Quantum Racing Terry Hutchinson and Jordi Calafat combined neatly on the first run of the final race, more readily identifying a big change in the late afternoon breeze which allowed them to pass Rán Racing and Interlodge to gain that second place.

Niklas Zennstrom’s world champions Rán Racing finish the first day of racing in third place overall counting a 2,4,3, a consistent scoreline given that conditions may have looked good but there was always something happening to challenge the tacticians.
Adrian Stead, Rán Racing’s tactician confirmed that he felt they could have been one or two points better for the day and that now need to be going out punching tomorrow to win races.

Good starts and first windward legs were vital. Austin Fragomen’s Interlodge – with John Cutler calling tactics – held on to second all the way around Race 2 and in Race 3 Ergin Imre’s team on Provezza scored a good fourth place which keeps them in touch with Interlodge which lie fourth overall.
