Monterey to Hawaii Kayakers | Blueforce Development Corporation
On June 8, 2013, two military veterans, R.W. Hand, and Clay W. Biles set out in two tandem kayaks on an unaided kayak voyage from Del Monte Beach, Monterey, CA to Hawaii (2,200 - 2,300 miles). Their mission is to raise awareness for two of the most honorable and hard working non-profit organizations that serve our veterans; the Navy SEAL Foundation and the Wounded Warrior Project. For those that served, and those that gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country, these veterans will be fulfilling their dreams for those that can no longer fulfill their own. Please help support them by donating to either the Wounded Warrior Project or the Navy SEAL Foundation.
Blueforce has outfitted RW and Clay with DeLorme InReach satellite trackers which send their position on a periodic interval when powered on. The map, at left, is updated as we receive pings from their trackers.
Please think of these men, and the men and women that serve this great nation, while they are paddling to Hawaii, and show your support. Tracking ; Monterey to Hawaii Kayakers | Blueforce Development Corporation

Operation Surf 2013: Active Duty and Veteran Servicemen Get Chance to Surf in Santa Cruz
On April 14th, Operation Surf commenced in Santa Cruz. Ten active duty and
veteran servicemen were brought out from Brooke Army Medical Hospital, and the
Center for the Intrepid in Texas. They spent 4 days in the water, learning to
surf with the likes of Richard Schmidt, Flea, Barney, Davis Paskowitz to name a
few.
This healing event is put on through a collaborative effort by Operation Comfort, Amazing Surf Adventures, and Richard Schmidt Surf School. As part of their on going rehabilitation, Operation Surf helps our wounded heroes face their challenges, and overcome perceived obstacles. The transformation in these guys from day 1 to day 4 is amazing, and the smiles are infectious.
Twice a year this event happens in Santa Cruz and San Luis Obispo. The communities turn out in force to host the soldiers, donating meals, lodging, and transportation, as well as their valuable time volunteering. The results are some very happy men and women who have so bravely sacrificed for their country.

ORACLE TEAM USA - New AC72 is ready to take flight
On Sunday in San Francisco, ORACLE TEAM USA rolled the team’s new AC72 racing yacht out of the shed to complete tests in advance of this week’s launch.
“While we have been racing at the America’s Cup World Series in Naples, Italy, the shore and build teams have been putting the finishing touches on our second AC72 here in San Francisco,” said general manager Grant Simmer. “At the completion of the regatta, we were able to push the new boat out of the shed today and successfully complete a round of load testing. It’s a tribute to quality work and dedication of the shore and build teams, together with the input and efforts from the sailing, design and performance teams, to complete the boat on schedule. We’re looking forward to the launch this week.”
Tests commenced shortly after the America’s Cup World Series regatta concluded in Naples, Italy, where ORACLE TEAM USA won the match race and captured the overall ACWS 2012-13 season championship for a second straight year.
“A big day for Oracle Team USA,” said skipper Jimmy Spithill. “Tom Slingsby and team won the match racing, and finished second in the fleet racing, meaning OTUSA wins a second consecutive ACWS championship – still the only team to hold the trophy since its inception in 2011. At the same time in San Francisco, the team rolled out our second AC72 and stepped the wing. A huge effort by the designers and shore/build teams. Great to see the depth and talent across the team in action.”

Offshore-style powerboat racing is coming to Lake Hopatcong Sunday May 12
Boat speeds on Lake Hopatcong are limited after Memorial Day, so it’s a good thing the inaugural Lake Hopatcong Grand Prix, May 10-12, will beat the holiday deadline.
With twin-engine racers hitting straightaways at 135 mph and cornering at 95 mph, the competitors in the Offshore Powerboat Association’s first race event of the year are used to exceeding limits.
“It’s all about adrenalin,” said Jay Muller, a Lake Hopatcong resident and the OPA’s top-ranked racer, who was instrumental in bringing the race circuit back to New Jersey’s largest lake.
Muller and up to 40 other racers will compete in six categories for a purse of about $25,000 on an “arena-style” 2.8-mile course that will be fully viewable from many locations on the lakeshore. The Brick-based OPA is using the Lake Forest Yacht Club as a staging area.

“Race at the first ever Ocean Racing World Championships!” - Australian Ocean Racing selection
This is the first year the world will see a Surf Ski (Ocean Racing) World Championships, which will be held at Vila do Conde, Portugal 12-14 July 2013.
Australian Canoeing Board Member Robbie Stewart anticipates the event with great excitement.
“this is an historic occasion. It will be the Mandela Cup and Bledislow Cup of paddling”
Selection for the Australian team will take place on the 18th or 19th May, depending on wind, at the Paddle New South Wales Open Water Surf Ski Final 2013 between Station Beach and Fishermans Beach.
Up to five Open Women and five Open Men may be selected for the World Championship event, as well as three in each of the Under 23 and Junior Men’s and Women’s classes.
Stewart says that the World Championship event will allow Australia to again prove our dominance in the sporting world, as we have an exceptionally strong field to select from.
“giving Australia a chance to confirm what we always knew - that Australia is the BEST Ocean/Open Water Surf Ski Country in the world!”

EPIC FINAL DAY AT THE 2013 ISA WORLD MASTERS CHAMPIONS IN MONTAÑITA, ECUADOR
During an epic day of amazing waves and tremendous surfing performances, the 2013 ISA World Masters Surfing Championship officially closed.
The waves were incredible throughout the Finals. The morning heats saw glassy surf in the 6-8 feet range at the perfect right hand point-break in Montañita, Ecuador. A gentle onshore breeze picked up mid-morning, but the waves remained consistent and pumping all day
Team Hawaii successfully defended their title of World Team Champions and winners of the Eduardo Arena Perpetual Team Trophy, named after the Peruvian founder and first President of the ISA in 1964.
“Huge congratulations to all of the winners. This was an amazing competition with great waves and excellent performances from all athletes,” commented ISA President Fernando Aguerre. “Thank you to everyone that helped organize this amazing event including the President of Ecuador Rafael Correa, the Minister of Sport Francisco Cevallos and the Deputy Minister Augusto Moran, and the over 20 government organizations that helped make this World Championship a reality. Ecuador is an incredible surfing destination. We plan to come back next year with another ISA world championship.”

Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards Nominees Announced for Wipeout and Performance - 2013 Awards Show is Coming on May 3rd
NEWPORT
BEACH, CA - (April 11, 2013) - The nominees in three of the most popular

Also being acknowledged among "the best of the worst" are: Joao De Macedo, who launched into space at Maverick's in Northern California; Tom Dosland for skimming on his back down the face of a huge wave at Jaws, Hawaii; and Axi Muniain for an aquatic reverse-somersault at Nazaré, Portugal.
For the
first time ever, the surfing public will be able to have their opinion count in
the selection of the winning wipeout by voting on Surfline.com. One third of
the tally to determine the most spectacular unsuccessful ride of the year will
be derived from the Surfline poll over the next three weeks, with the balance
of scoring coming from the elite academy of surfing experts ala the Oscar
voting process. To review the nominees and cast your vote on Surfline,

available by visiting the Wipeouts page of the

Young Guns Go Off on the Opening Day of the Tahiti Nui Pro Junior
PAPARA, Tahiti (Wednesday, April 10, 2013) – The second of two back-to-back ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series events in French Polynesia, the Tahiti Nui Pro Junior ran the opening Round of the men’s competition today at Papara rivermouth, Tahiti. With 2 – 3 foot (1.5 meter) running lefts and rights on offer, the field of international competitors unloaded their full repertoire in an exciting day of surfing.
The second annual Tahiti Nui Pro Junior carries an ASP 3-Star rating for the men’s division and for the fist time the event has added a women’s ASP 3-Star division, the Vahine Pro Junior. This event offers vital points and prize-money towards qualifying for the ASP World Junior Championships.
Kalani Ball (South Coast, NSW/AUS) opened the event with a dominant heat win, mixing carves and big aerials to easily advance into the next Round with the highest two-wave heat-total of the event thus far 16.00 (out of a possible 20).
“At the start of the heat I couldn’t get any waves,” Ball said. “Halfway through I just started catching a few little ones to get my score up and then I got a really good wave and got a 9.00 so I’m stoked. I’m so happy to win that heat, it was a hard heat with all of the guys getting good scores.”

America’s Cup World Series - Sailing team goes looking for action
Action from our last visit to Naples …. hard racing at a great venue.
Emirates Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker is keen to get into racing mode for the America’s Cup World Series AC45 regatta at Naples.
This is our last chance to get in some real racing before we start sailing in San Francisco, he said as he prepared to head to the northern hemisphere.
The sailing team for Naples is now en route. The shore crew has been in place for several days to assemble the AC45 and set up the base.
The team will be sailing off Naples within 24 hours of their arrival.
Dean Barker: “Sailing in Auckland well over – there’s tremendous activity around the base getting ready for the move.” More than 30 containers will be on their way to the port this week.
“We are also doing modifications on the second AC72 and refitting the first boat. The wing has have been pulled apart and the elements are being shrink-wrapped ready for shipping.”
He says the team is looking forward to Naples and some hard racing. We are not exactly in AC45 race mode at the moment, but we will have a few days practice in Naples before racing starts.
“It’s a good opportunity to put ourselves under pressure to sharpen racing skills before San Francisco.”
The sailing squad for Naples is: Dean Barker, Glenn Ashby, Ray Davies, James Dagg, Derek Saward, Adam Beashel, Winston Macfarlane and Jeremy Lomas.
Racing at Naples starts in a week and ends on Sunday April 21.
