The Victory crew were in a league of their own and the first boat to complete the 5.05Nm lap in under three minutes. They posted a time of 2:57.70s on their first flying lap and after a set-up change and a switch of propellers improved by over three seconds to post the best time of the 90 minute session - 2.54.02s. “It was a very good session for us. The circuit was clear and the conditions very flat,” said Al Zafeen. “I race in Abu Dhabi a lot and know the circuit very well. I am sure we will be quickest in qualifying with that sort of pace.”
Guido Cappellini and Giampaolo Montavoci settled for running just two laps and were immediately on the pace, scrubbing four seconds off the opening lap after a ratio change to go second quickest in 2.58.99s. “This was the opposite too what we did in Dubai. Here we had the perfect set-up for the conditions,” said Cappellini. “But we are limited with our propeller choice so all we can do is play with the ratios.”
Team Abu Dhabi went third quickest and one of just three outfits to break the three minute barrier, but Rashed Al Tayer and Majed Al Mansoori will need to find five seconds if they are to challenge their UAE neighbours.
