Garrett McNamara Returns to Nazare in October for New Adventures | Surfline

It's almost that time of year again. Garrett McNamara and crew are starting to pack their bags and boards to head over to Praia do Norte, Nazaré to play in the North Canyon for two months of October and November.

McNamara has been coming to Nazaré for the winters since 2010 when the local government invited him to bring attention to the giant waves of Praia do Norte. They only had expectations of attracting more surfers but once McNamara discovered the biggest waves he has ever seen people from all over the world have flocked to see these giants being ridden.

Over the past three years Nazaré has continued to prove itself as one of the most consistent and massive big wave locations. It currently holds the Guinness World Record for largest wave ever surfed. From day one in 2010, McNamara has been inviting world class watermen to come and see what Praia do Norte is all about. Up until this point there have been a few Portuguese, Europeans and international surfers who have tested the waters. This year more international surfers have decided to accept the invitation as well as large corporate brands and their riders.

" For the past three years it has been a bit lonely for us with only a few visitors here and there. I am really excited to surf Praia do Norte with more friends. It will be nice to have a few more people to paddle out with from the village and through the canyon to see what is on the other side. I am also just excited to be back home and enjoy Nazare... everything is better in Portugal!!!" says Garrett.

The North Canyon is looking forward to having Portuguese Big Wave Rider Hugo Vau return as well this year. For Hugo, he says " being part of such a unique project as the North Canyon is a dream come true. I am very happy with the invitation that was made to me by Garrett! It is a great pleasure and a great honor to share with everyone around the world the energy of the mighty Praia do Norte!

Nazaré is a very special and unique place and I am very grateful for all the waves and unforgettable moments that I have experienced. I am really looking forward creating more amazing memories with all the friendly and passionate people by the sea in Nazaré!."

Supporters of the ZON North Canyon project can expect all the excitement from previous years as well as a few surprise visitors.
