Kailis' King of the Point Presented By the City of Stirling

Epic waves greeted competitors on the final day of the Kailis' King of the Point presented by the City of Stirling at Trigg Beach today.

With light winds and a bump in the swell overnight, clean sets rolled through Trigg Point all morning. The action in the water was red hot as contestants battled it out for a spot in the finals and to ultimately be crowned 'King of the Point' to go home five thousand dollars richer.

 

Rusty team-rider Jay Davies (Yallingup) and Margaret River's Dave Delroy-Carr put on a stellar show against their counterparts in the semi-finals but were unable to match the power and style of former ASP World Tour competitor Jake Paterson (Yallingup) and multiple Margaret River Classic winner Tom Innes (Dunsborough), who battled it out in the man-on-man final in front of a building crowd.

 

Despite a south westerly change creating some unwanted lump and bump on the waves, Yallingup surfer Jake Paterson powered through the afternoon conditions to prove he is still a dominant force in competitive surfing.

Paterson started the final making it known that he intended to win with big outside manoeuvres followed up by solid finishing turns. Tom Innes answered back with just as much conviction but was unable to find the required score to challenge for the win.

 

In the end it was Paterson's wave selection and powerful surfing that led him to the throne and crowned the 2013 King of the Point ahead of a gallant Innes.

 

Paterson who surfed in the opening heat of the event back on Friday, won each of his following heats to mark a memorable return for the event which has a long and prestigious history.

 

Paterson can add Trigg Point to an impressive list of locations he's won at including Jefferys Bay along with Sunset and Pipeline in Hawaii.

 

"I'm originally from Cottesloe and growing up as a kid this competition was the biggest thing ever." Paterson said. "I'm thrilled to see the event return and to join a list of guys that have won here means a lot to me. Thanks to everyone that has made it possible."

 

The O/30 Masters division was another nail-biting affair with Trigg locals Mick Jardine and Marc Lee taking on Yallingup's Jake Paterson and Ryan Wordsworth. In a head to head battle Paterson and Lee traded blows, with Lee setting the standard for the final and continued his form throughout to take out a convincing win.

 

" I surf this place everyday and didn't fair so well in Open's. But to win ahead of Jake in this one is a good enough replacement." Said Lee.

 

The U/21 Pro Junior final was an exciting insight into the future of WA surfing, with all contenders bringing everything they had to the table. Geraldton's Max Marsden who was keeping up with the 'big boys' in the Open Men's division all weekend earnt the top spot with a combined total of 16.66 points (from a possible 20), ahead of Trigg local Pascal Hutchinson who finished in second on 12.30 points.

 

National U/14 champion Kael Walsh (Yallingup) finished in third annd Nalu Keala (Trigg) in fourth place.

 

"I wish we had a waves like this in Gero. I really like it and it's been a great weekend." Said Marsden.

The battle for Queen of the Point saw some of WA's best female surfers take to the water, with former ASP World Tour competitor Claire Bevilacqua dominating. Using her past win at the event and competition experience, Bevilacqua impressed to take out the title ahead of sisters Laura and Bronte Macaulay (Gracetown) who finished second and third respectively ahead of current U/18 girls state junior rankings leader Ella Massie (Margaret River).

 

The U/16 young guns charged Trigg Point in their final pulling off impressive manoeuvres in the afternoon waves. Kalbarri's Fletcher Cremasco took out the top spot ahead of Ace Van Peer (Mandurah) in second, Kael Walsh (Yallingup) in third and Fletcher Llanwarne (Duncriag) in fourth.

Huge crowds turned out at Trigg to watch the finals action, enjoy the weather and join in on some of the fun that was being had.
