Final Wingman Trialists Decided At Bells

Local standouts Dylan Schulze, Troy Brooks, Josh Johnson-Baxter and Jack Perry ripped apart fun Bells during the Wingman Pre-Trials on Sunday and earned the final four spots into the Wingman Trials

March 24, 2013 – Surfing Victoria celebrated its 50th year anniversary Sunday at Bells Beach with the Wingman Pre Trials and the gathering of past members and administrators.

In great 4ft waves, the Wingman Pre Trials decided the four surfers who will progress through to the Wingman Trials and compete for the opportunity to receive a wildcard into the Rip Curl Pro Presented by FORD.

Dylan Schulze (Anglesea), Troy Brooks (Jan Juc), Josh Johnson-Baxter (Ocean Grove) and Jack Perry (Jan Juc) have all progressed through to the Wingman Trials. They will face off against Cahill Bell Warren (Bells Beach), Nic Muscroft (Jan Juc), Harry Mann (Torquay) and Carl Wright (Phillip Island) who all gained automatic entry.

Both Schulze and Brooks were dominant in their semi final scoring 15.84 and 14.00 (out of a possible 20) respectively. Both surfers utilized their experience at the break to take down the younger Cody Robinson (Jan Juc) and Walter Hiatt (Phillip Island).

Johnson-Baxter was a standout in his semi-final, scoring an excellent wave of 8.83 (out of a possible 10) to secure first place in his heat in front of Jack Perry. Todd Rosewall (Jan Juc) and Jarvis Cininas (Phillip Island) placed third and fourth respectively.

Coinciding with the Wingman Pre Trials, a gathering of past members and administrators of Surfing Victoria celebrated the 50th year anniversary of the organisation. A selection of past champions were given the opportunity to surf Bells Beach with just their peers which included greats such as Terry Wall, Adam Robertson, Rod Brooks, Tony Ray, Nikki Van Dijk and Greg Brown.

The Wingman initiative is part of the Victorian Government’s continuing commitment to encouraging young people to avoid alcohol-related violence.

The Wingman delivers a message to young people that it is important to take responsibility for themselves and their friends when out having a good time so they avoid potentially violent, alcohol-fuelled situations.
