As ORACLE TEAM USA concluded their first training session in Sydney, Australia, skipper Jimmy Spithill explained how he and sailing team manager / tactician Tom Slingsby were sharing the leadership responsibilities on the team.
“I’m getting more involved in the technical side and overall direction of the team,” Spithill said. “With Grant Simmer and Russell Coutts, it’s a nice opportunity to learn from a couple of guys who really have dominated the America’s Cup.
“On the other side, it’s great to have someone like Tom Slingsby, who has a lot of hunger and drive to step in and take the reins of the operation of the sailing team. I think he’s one of the best talents out there.”
For his part, Slingsby says the first training days of the 35th America’s Cup were a success as the team worked in some new talent and had some time for team bonding.
“We trialled a few different sailors which was great, we got the old band back together and got to chatting and sharing stories from over the last six months and now I’m really looking forward to the next step,” he said.
“It’s been really nice to get back into it and get the guys together again,” agreed wing trimmer Kyle Langford. “It’s been beautiful sailing in Sydney Harbour and we’ve had good breeze and some good competition with the Aussies (Team Australia).”
