Race: Space Coast 16 August 2013 - 18 August 2013 - P1 Superstock

Where else can you choose between watching a space launch by the sea or dolphins at play? Or surf cast from the beach and see giant cruise ships sail by? Or see mangroves, manatees and whales in migration? And rub shoulders with surfing champions and shrimp fishermen? That's quite a list, and powerboat and jet ski racing are about to be added to it as the P1 SuperStock USA Championship and AquaX series prepare to head to Florida's Space Coast..

Stretching for more than 70 miles along Florida's central east coast, the Space Coast is best known as the home of NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center. Just a little further south, Cocoa Beach welcomes around 2.5 million day visitors each year, making it the top tourist destination. P1 championship manager Azam Rangoonwala is very much aware of the unique appeal of the area:

"Our powerboat teams and jet ski riders have been talking about racing on the Space Coast ever since the P1 calendar was announced. It's a special place and a unique location, and I know the racers and fans will have a superb weekend. I'm sure The Cove at Port Canaveral will be a popular destination when racing is over, with Fish Lips on everyone's list. Our aim is to make it an annual event."

The P1 SuperStock race series has already visited Stuart, Daytona Beach and Pahokee this summer, and the final stop will be Marathon in mid-September. In partnership with the International Jet Sport Boating Association, P1 USA launched the AquaX jet ski series in June, with Daytona Beach serving up sunshine, surf, thrills and spills at the opening event.

Nine P1 Panther race boats and twenty AquaX riders will be in action at Jetty Park over the two days. In addition to scheduling the race program, Azam is working to ensure that no harm comes to the local wildlife. "Race boats and wildlife simply don't mix" he says. "Our marine watch program is just as important as the racing itself and we have a team of observers, together with a helicopter, to identify any sightings of marine life in the vicinity of the race course and, if necessary, to temporarily stop the racing.

The P1 fleet will arrive at Bluepoints Marina on Friday 16th August, with racing kicking off on Saturday morning in front of Jetty Park.
