We are all familiar with sports news telling us that fixtures have been postponed because of bad weather, but how often have you heard the announcer say that racing has been called off because of manatees on the course? Well, that's exactly the headline the promoters of the powerboat racing weekend in Stuart, Florida later this month will be seeking to avoid.
P1 SuperStock USA will be racing at the Sailfish Regatta on 21st -22nd April in an area that is a manatee protection zone. Living in warm, shallow waters, manatees can grow up to 12 feet in length and are protected by state and federal law. Weighing in at up to 1,800 lbs and with a gentle nature, they can live up to sixty years.
Race boats and these marine mammals don't mix, so Powerboat P1 will be using a light aircraft to ensure that manatees and other marine animals don't enter the race area.
P1 SuperStock also races in England and, working closely with councils, harbour masters and environmental groups, measures are taken to ensure that events do not disrupt the local wildlife.
"Wherever we race in the world, we recognise the need and embrace the value of protecting the environment and conserving natural resources" said P1 USA director Azam Rangoonwala. "The P1 Marine Foundation, an international charity based in London, was launched in 2010 with the aim of educating and developing awareness for the marine and coastal environment, and it is very much involved in our event planning and strategic decisions."
