Mike Jones, co-owner of the 9 Team RedDOT with wife Lori, has informed H1 that damage sustained during Friday qualifying for the 2013 Coeur d’Alene Diamond Cup will keep  the team from making the trip to the season ender on San Diego’s Mission Bay September 13-15.

FENDI RACING TAKING EXHAUSTIVE MEASURES TO ERADICATE ANY TECHNICAL ISSUES

Monday, 2 September: Fendi Racing throttleman Giovanni Carpitella will get his first impressions of the proposed circuit for next months’ Mediterranean Grand Prix [18-20 October] when he joins H2O Racing’s sporting director Marco Sala and local organiser Emilio Sardellitti for a site visit in Terracina.

Carpitella and team owner-driver Luca Formilli Fendi sit in third spot in the title race behind leader’s Victory and HUB Team Australia, and will be bidding for their first win together since teaming-up in Abu Dhabi in 2010, but face the added pressure of being the home favourites.

Chris Fertig and Tyson Garvin aren’t wasting any time. According to Garvin, of Joplin, Mo., he and Fertig, of Virginia Beach, Va., are aiming to set a new Guinness World Record as soon as possible. Less than two weeks after driving their Skater Powerboats 399 V-bottom across the Atlantic Ocean, the two performance boat aficionados are looking to establish a record from Bermuda to the United States.

Surely most of you are familiar with the duo’s recent record-setting run from New York to Bermuda as part of Boating Magazine’s Bermuda Challenge. If not, let me briefly fill you in. The first two-time Bermuda Challenge record setters finished the 780-plus-mile endurance run in 15 hours and 48 minutes just after midnight on August 22. The feat was accomplished nearly a year after the two completed the run in a diesel-powered 37-foot Statement Marine center console in 21 hours and 39 minutes, a record that was broken two months later by legendary Italian boatbuilder Fabio Buzzi in 17 hours and 6 minutes. San Francisco Shootout: Kiwi and American Young Guns Tied for Lead / America’s Cup

The eyes of the sailing world were on the future stars today, as the NZL Sailing Team with Emirates Team New Zealand and American Youth Sailing Force came away tied for the overall lead at the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. This 10-team, 8-country fleet race is delivering tight and competitive racing on San Francisco Bay at the halfway point of the regatta. In fact, four different countries have taken the checkered flag in the four fleet races so far – USA, New Zealand, Portugal and Sweden.
The top seven teams are separated by just 3 points with four races remaining over the next two days, with double points on the line in the final race.

“We’re surprised to be in the lead, but happy to be there and looking forward to getting back out tomorrow,” said NZL Sailing Team skipper Peter Burling, a silver medalist in the 49er class at the 2012 Olympics. “We didn’t have a great start to the day but got an alright finish on the board in the second race to bring us back into it. I think it’ll come down to the last day anyway, so we’re trying to build as a group and looking forward to each day as it comes.”

Top seven within 3 points of each other after Race 4 / America’s Cup

UPDATE: 1225 hours
The Swedish Youth Challenge won Race 4 of the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. Skipper Charlie Ekberg and crew were in a great battle with Lucien Cujean’s Team Tilt crew from Switzerland, but the Swedes eked out a 5-second victory on the 7.21-nautical mile course.

The standings are quite tight, with the top seven crews all within 3 points of each other. The NZL Sailing Team with Emirates Team New Zealand and the American Youth Sailing Force are tied for the lead with 28 points. Team Tilt holds third with 27 points, followed by the Swedish Youth Challenge, Full Metal Jacket and ROFF Cascais Sailing Team, all with 26 points. France’s Next World Energy crew is seventh with 25 points.

Races 5 and 6 are scheduled tomorrow, at 1110 and 1150 PT.

History in the making - Diana Nyad has become the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without the help of a shark cage. The 64-year-old Nyad stepped ashore in Key West on Monday just before 2 p.m., about 53 hours after she began her swim in Havana on Saturday.

    

Crown Prince puts royal seal on Cold Hawaii World Cup

The world’s best wave windsurfers are gearing up for the 2013 KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup in Klitmøller, Denmark, from September 16-22 and the spotlight will be even brighter with HRH Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark attending as the new patron of the event. The Crown Prince, a former Danish Navy Seal, accomplished sailor and iron man triathlete, will try his hand at windsurfing on Sunday, September 15, before the pros take over.

The new format of a 32-man field will be as strong as ever with 2012 champion, Thomas Traversa, from France, defending his title. The man he beat in the final, Philip Köster, windsurfing’s wunderkind, will start as favourite though, especially if the wind is up. Köster, the 19-year-old double world champion, started the defence of his crown by winning in Tenerife in August. He showed his all-round skills in beating arch-rival Viktor Fernandez Lopez, the 2010 world champion, in the final with an astonishing stalled double forward and super smooth taka. With the first round in July lost in an unusually windless and waveless Pozo, Gran Canaria, the heat is on in Cold Hawaii to make every move count.
