Suncoast boat race could be in jeopardy for 2013

SARASOTA - A summer tradition on the Suncoast for almost thirty years could be coming to an end this season. Organizers for the Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix say unless they can come up with the money to pay the nearly $80,000 sanction fee to hold the event, the race could easily speed out of Sarasota.

The race has become a Sarasota signature event every July 4th weekend, and Steve Kildahl has been at the helm for every single race. "In the 29 years that the event’s been going on, the economic impact that has been created by the racers and the full festival is a huge impact, I would believe, for the city of Sarasota."

The race had an impact of $14.2 million to be precise just last year.

But losing the race has become a real possibility. On Tuesday, the Sarasota County Commission approved a $10,000 grant and $3,500 worth of in-kind services to help fund the event.

Suncoast Charities for Children, which organizes the race, had requested $100,000.

“It’s harder to get in-kind sponsors and local businesses to step up the way they used to in the past." Kildahl feels that pinch just trying to get sponsors for his own boat.

Event organizers say they're feeling that same pinch on a much larger scale, most notably the $79,200 sanction fee to Super Boat International needed just to hold the race, not to mention everything from security, to helicopters and logistical support.

Commissioner Joe Barbetta had made a motion at Tuesday’s meeting to cover the sanction fee, which was seconded by Commissioner Carolyn Mason. The motion was voted down by the other three members of the commission.

Racers say if it doesn't happen in Sarasota, some other Florida city will snatch it up. "It would be a shame if we were to lose this race, not only for the fact that the four or five local race teams wouldn't be in Sarasota on the 4th, we'd be somewhere else, but the economic impact on the city and the county.”

The attendance at the event has been increasing every year, while the net gain for the charity has been decreasing each year. Organizers say it’s yet another sign of the times and the recovering economy.

Anniversary Occasion, International Rolex Regatta Fleet

Commencing tomorrow, Thursday 21 March, and running to Sunday 24 March, the International Rolex Regatta celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
An impressive fleet of seventy boats will contest three days of racing as part of an event that has graced the international yachting calendar since the 1970s.

Participants include an array of overseas yachts, with crews from Germany, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom in addition to the usual large contingent from the United States and the Caribbean. Perennial competitor Donnybrook, owned by American Jim Muldoon, is the event's largest entrant at 23.84 metres/80-feet. Lupa of London from the United Kingdom and owned by Jeremy Pilkington is second largest at 23.77-metres. Pilkington is switching focus from the rigors of offshore racing following recent appearances at the Giraglia Rolex Cup and the Rolex Middle Sea Race. A historical note is provided by Ceramco NZ from the US, a one time Sir Peter Blake-skippered Whitbread Around The World yacht.

American entries Island Water World, Naia'a and White Rhino in addition to the British crew on Northern Child - four of the Swan yachts that competed in last week's Rolex Swan Cup Caribbean - are making the short trip from Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands to continue an active racing season.

Reflecting on the upcoming event, International Rolex Regatta Chairman Bill Canfield remarked, "Reliable winds every day, terrific competition, a challenging mix of courses, and of course plenty of camaraderie, the 40th Anniversary of the International Rolex Regatta will be a regatta to remember!"
Hosted by the St. Thomas Yacht Club, the competition, which dates back to 1974, is the oldest regatta in Rolex's portfolio of international sailing events.

Racing is scheduled to start on Friday 22 March at 11:00 AST. Classes include IRC, CSA as well as one-design competition in Melges 32, IC 24 and Beach Cat. Registration takes place on Thursday 24 March, followed in the afternoon by a Skipper's Briefing. The final prizegiving will be held on Sunday 24 March at 18:30 following the conclusion of proceedings on the water.

Hagara, Steinacher enter America's Cup World Series Naples

Austrians Roman Hagara and Hans-Peter Steinacher, double Olympic Gold medalists in the Tornado catamaran, have entered the upcoming America’s Cup World Series Naples, scheduled Apr. 16-21.

The duo will sail under the banner HS Racing, and race under the US flag in partnership with ORACLE TEAM USA.

“It is a dream come true for us,” said Hagara, 46, whose aim, along with tactician Steinacher and their crew is a top placing at the final event of the 2012-13 AC World Series season.

HS Racing’s crew will also include trimmer Herve Cunningham of France, bowman Graeme Spence of Australia and floater David Swete of New Zealand.

“We trained on the AC45 back in February in San Francisco and felt very good from the start,” said Steinacher, 44. “The boat is extremely difficult to handle at strong winds and it develops unbelievable forces, but we are happy to take on the challenge.”

Hagara and Steinacher were Gold medalists at the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympics. They are also the sports directors for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, scheduled Sept. 1-4 in San Francisco.

“It’s great to have Roman and Hans Peter involved,” said ORACLE TEAM USA CEO Russell Coutts. “They aim to be serious competitors and this is a great platform to launch their America’s Cup aspirations.”

A total of nine crews are slated to compete at AC World Series Naples, including ORACLE TEAM USA, Artemis Racing (Sweden), China Team, Emirates Team New Zealand, Energy Team (France), J.P. Morgan BAR (Great Britain) and Luna Rossa Challenge (Italy).

Price is right for UIM XCAT action in Dubai

The American will be joining forces with former rival in Formula 2, Sultan Al Daheri, in one of two boats that have been sponsored by Gabon – hosts of one of the upcoming international races, later in the season.

“I’ve managed to have two days of testing now and am feeling very comfortable in the boat so it’s pretty exciting. We’re looking forward to getting out there and racing,” said Price, who first expressed an interest in XCAT racing when involved with the Victory Team in Formula 1 last year.

“I would say the biggest challenge in XCAT is communication. Two people have to become one. In Formula 1 I am used to doing everything myself so you really have to get used to working together,” he added.

“People coming out to watch who haven’t seen XCAT racing before certainly have something to look forward to – the sound of the engines, the size of the boats – it really is addictive.”

The Gabon boats are a new addition to the series this weekend, which will see 14 boats taking each other on at the Dubai International Marine Club from March 21-23.

“It promises to be a great weekend of racing and we are looking forward to having 14 boats out on the water. It’s wonderful that Gabon have come on board in such a big way with the sponsorship of two boats in the series and we are excited to be taking the action to their wonderful venue

during the summer,” said Sid Bensalah, Secretary General of the World Professional Powerboating Association (WPPA) and UIM XCAT World Series Chief Officer.

Price and Al Daheri will be up against current series leaders, Fazza’s Mohammed Al Merri (UAE) and Arif Al Zaffain (UAE) who have been in sensational form this year – winning the first two events of the season. Close behind them is the Mouawad pair of Omar Danial (SUI) and Gary Ballough (USA) who have also reached the podium on two occasions – twice finishing second.

All the action starts with Official Practice on Thursday afternoon, followed by the thrilling Speed Cat Run on Friday which will see two boats pitted against each other in the ultimate head-to-head test of speed from 3.30-4.30pm. The main race of the weekend will then take place on Saturday at 3.30pm. Entry to the event is free of charge.

A new prize money structure has been put in place from this weekend, with all participants guaranteed a share of the spoils. US$150,000 will be up for grabs, to be distributed among the 14 teams, with the grand prix winners taking home $11,000.

Also part of proceedings is a safety workshop which has brought together experts from across the world to discuss and develop the safety aspect of the sport even further.
