Medals Decided in Paralympic and Windsurfing Events, ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami

MIAMI, Fla. (February 1, 2013) – The first ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami medalists of 2013 were determined on day five. Men’s and Women’s RS:X events conducted semifinal and final round races. The 2.4 mR and Sonar fleets of the Paralympic events took part in their final day of fleet racing.

Israel’s Maayan Davidovich and Spain’s Ivan Pastor saved their best for last in the Women’s and Men’s RS:X events. Davidovich had one win prior to the finals and Pastor had none. They each won their dramatic, winner take all final race to capture gold.

Pastor, a two-time Olympian in 2012 and 2008, was ecstatic about his first ISAF Sailing World Cup title. “It feels incredible to win one of these great World Cup events,” he said. “The conditions were ideal for me with the strong wind. It was more stable and I maneuvered well to get in position.”

Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii (February 1st, 2013): It was just after daybreak this morning when the 2013 Volcom Pipe Pro was called on for the second day in a row and soon the round of 96 was back underway with contestants facing risky and turbulent conditions. As the day went on conditions improved, the scores got higher, and heading into the round of 64 pipe really turned on. Last years Volcom Pipe Pro winner, John John Florence, took full advantage and was a standout in the day’s event

Offshore, along the coast of Brasil, to the west of Cape Verde, the Canary Islands, between Madeira and the Azores the skippers sail in the winds, along the edge of high pressure. There is another is low north of Spain. "That's the Vendée Globe," said Bertrand De Broc (Votre Nom Autour du Monde avec EDM).

It is an anthology of fickle conditions for the nine competitors still racing. Their arrival dates in Les Sables d'Olonne range between the 4th and 18th February.

It is terrible weather in Les Sables d'Olonne. The storm that was forecast and causing Jean-Pierre Dick (Virbac Paprec 3) to decide to seek shelter on a buoy in Galicia, Spain has arrived. There is rain and strong gusts. This winter wind does not prevent onlookers wandering around the race village, in Port Olona, to visit the first three boats of the Vendée Globe. Now, they await a fourth; a blue boat without a keel.

Since his arrival yesterday (Thursday) at 5:30 at the port of San Ciprián, the skipper of Virbac-Paprec 3 has not been tapping his feet. He has swung the boat 180 degrees around on it’s mooring, dived beneath to check the damage and also to affix his line so the boat is more secure. "It's impressive," he told us this morning, talking about the damage beneath. He’s food supplies are low. Today, he enjoyed some pureed vegetable. Yesterday, bloggers, journalists and Spanish TV show all come to stare at the boat. Jean Pick has made a sign saying ‘do not touch the boat’.  He sits in a situation that is part prison, part zoo. But having rested and undertaken his boat husbandry, and completed some jobs on the jobslist he is ready to leave at daybreak on Sunday. The wind around the Spanish coast is not very co-operative, with light airs at first before there is a westerly flow, which will fill his sails and project him back to Les Sables d’Olonne.

2013 VOLCOM PIPE PRO COMPLETES EXCITING FIRST DAY OF COMPETITION

Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii (January 31st, 2013): Today marked day five of the 2013 Volcom Pipe Pro waiting period and after four straight “lei days,” mother nature finally cooperated allowing the contest to be called on in temperamental yet fun conditions with waves ranging from head high to more than double-overhead. There was no shortage of excitement throughout the day’s event which started out with the local trials, then the round of 112, into the thrilling VLCQ heat, and finished off halfway through the round of 96. The day’s competition saw epic tube rides, nasty wipeouts and some high scores, including Kawai Lindo’s perfect 10 in the VLCQ.

The Swedish city of Gothenburg will be the final stop on the route for the 12th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race in 2014-15 and will also feature in the 13th edition under a two-race deal presented on Friday.
