ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX, TWO NAUTICAL MILE START RUN HOLDS THE KEY TO OUTCOME OF RACES

Thursday, 20 December, ABU DHABI (UAE): Yesterday’s qualifying results is still the best indicator as to who will be challenging Victory for top spot in race 1 of today’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but the crucial factor will be which team of the eight teams copes best with the two nautical mile start run in potentially rough conditions outside of Lulu Island.

Today’s morning practice gave away very little with teams mixing up the laps, some taking the opportunity to run the outside leg, some focussing on the short lap and others content just to run the race lap. But what is clear is that the difference between race lap and short lap is likely to be between 25-30 seconds.

Teams must take two mandatory short laps, the first by 50% the second by 70% of the scheduled 10 laps (49.97Nm).

If the conditions outside of Lulu Island remain similar to this morning it will not be too much of an issue. “Compared to what we saw in Dubai it was almost flat out there,” said Peter McGrath, racing with Darren Nicholson in Victory Australia. “But you still have to be cautious. It would be easy to get caught out. The problem is set-up. You have more to lose if you set-up for the outside leg, hoping it will be very rough, than going for a compromise.”

There was a problem for Guido Cappellini and Giampaolo Montavoci during practice, who will start race 1 in P2 after their best qualifying performance of the season yesterday, when Spirit of Gabon-Poliform stopped with an engine problem after just a couple of laps. “This is not a good situation. This is an engine with very little time on it and now we have to change it.”
